ENGLISH FEELING FOR POLITICAL CHARACTER.

[TO THE EDITOR OF THE " 8nm-rims:I Siu,—In an article headed " Mr. Balfour and the People," you observe :—" At bottom, what Englishmen care for, and what influences them, is character."

The following sentences from Burnet's portrait of Lord Russell (" History of My Own Times ") afford a striking illustration of your theory :—" He [Lord Russell] was a slow man, and of little discourse He had given such proofs of an undaunted courage and of an unshaken firmness, that I never knew any man have so entire a credit in the nation as he had."—I am, Sir, &c., H.
