Much stir has been caused in Denmark and in Slesvig-Holetein

by the thought that the coming peace settlement may reunite to Denmark a part or all of the annexed provinces. The Danes are concentrating their attention upon Article V. of the Treaty of Prague. This was the Treaty made between Prussia and Austen after the latter bad been beaten by Prussia at Sadowa. It will be remembered that Prussia and Austria—united in a criminal act of aggression—compelled Denmark by force of arms in 1864 to yield the provinces which were the object of Teutonic covetous- ness. No sooner had the theft been committed than the thieves

disagreed, and the Austro-Prussian. War of 1866 followed. In the Treaty of Prague the Emperor of Austria handed over to the King of Prussia, as he could not avoid doing, all rights with regard to the Duchies of Holstein and Slesvig, with the condition that the populations of the Northern districts of Slesvig should be returned to Denmark if by a plebiscite they expressedtheir desire for reunion.
