Both Houses of Parliament met today, to forward the public

business; and several measures were forwarded a stage.

In the House of Commons, the CHANCELLOR of the EXCHEQUER said, in reply to Mr. Wu-Lux Wnssems, that 3,644,000/ had been sub- scribed towards the five millions to be funded; but he did not know how much of that amount was in money or how much in Exchequer Bills.

In reply to remarks by Mr. HAWES, Sir JAMES Gamlen admitted the importance of the Sixth Report of the Prison Inspectors. He had given directions to the Inspectors to lay before him a report, containing an account—firstly, of matters to which he should direct his attention ; secondly, of matters which, according to law, came under the control of the Secretary of State; and thirdly, of such matters as demanded the attention of Parliament, and which in a future session of Parliament would require the attention of that branch of the Legislature.
