The Story of the Trojan War. (James Blackwood.)—This is de-

scribed as "an epitome of incidents, actions, an events which occurred before, at, and after the siege of Troy." The task has been well per- formed, notwithstanding some blemishes. Perhaps the author is right, considering the average knowledge of the readers for whom the volume is intended, in using the Latin names of the divinities. But why should "Jove " be over employed, when no necessities of verse compel, instead of the moro dignified Jupiter ? And why should such a bar- barism as " Grecians " be ever admitted ? We do not know of any "Grecians" except at Christ's Hospital. Why, again, "Dolan" and " Polydamus"? In this matter of the names the book certainly wants revision, but, on the whole, it deserves the commendation with which Dr. Ellicott, who supplies a preface, introduces it to the reader.
