Maids for free?

From Mr F. Gygax Sir: It is difficult to understand Petronella Wyatt's scandalised response to Mr Brown's tax-relief scheme favouring mid- dle-class employers of domestic labour ('Gordon's little helper', 18 September). Why all the fuss?

Less than 100 years ago the middle class- es were the biggest employers on the labour market, absorbing most of the available labour for domestic service and thus con- tributing significantly to the enviable stabil- ity of those times. Two world wars and the attendant social upheavals have drastically impoverished the middle classes, so we should applaud Gordon Brown for having dreamt up an appropriate tax scheme capable of drasti- cally reducing unemployment among the classes most affected by it.
