Mr. Watney, the new Member for East Surrey, was girt

with the sword on Saturday, and endeavoured to recite a speech to the crowd. He broke down once, but his supporters were good- tempered, and he finally managed to say he was elected to vindi- cate "a great principle." Ho would doubtless have defined that principle, if he had known what it was ; but as lie did not, he took the wiser course, and left it there. That is no cause, however, for Liberal exultation, the significance of the election consisting in this, that the Tories carried in a candidate whose sole claim, by their own consent, is hostility to the Government. No other cry seems to have been raised during the election, and it is said that the register will show that hundreds of Mr. Buxton's supporters voted for Mr. Watney.
