A CJURIOUS PHENOMENON. Lye THE EDITOR OP THE " SPECTATOR:1

think it is worth mentioning, though I can only give second-hand authority, that some friends of mine, living in the Close, at Salisbury, were alarmed on the evening of August 7th or 8th, by seeing apparently a cloud of smoke rising from the top of the spire of the Cathedral. They showed it to the verger, Mr. Freemantle, who said that it was a swarm of insects, and that he had seen it, before. Some men who were looking up said the same, and it dispersed in a manner which showed that this was the case. Could they have been winged-ants ? It was at the time at which they appear, but there could hardly be nests at such an elevation. Has anything of the kind been observed elsewhere P—I am, Sir, &a, C. M. YONGE. Elderfield, Otterbourne, August 26th.
