Slightly foxed

From Mr Tom Jones Sir: I greatly enjoyed Paul Johnson's notes on wildlife in his local countryside (And another thing, 12 August). Like him, we have buzzards and house martins constantly flying over and around us, and we also have a vixen in the garden.

But our old girl, unlike his, has two cubs, not pups. Has his had an unnatural rela- tionship with a dog, I wonder? With his vast literary knowledge he must have come across the following verse by Hilaire Belloc:

There once was a fellow Who rode to the meet And referred to the pads Of the fox as his feet Which furnished subscribers With reasonable grounds For refusing to make him A Master of Hounds.
