Tacchinarcli, the greatest tenor of his day, and the father

of Madame Persiani, died at Florence a few days ago, at the age of eighty-seven. He was a little man, and far from handsome-a circumstance which sometimes led to desagremens on the stage. One day when some persons were so Gothic as to hiss him for looking a part ill, he addressed them, "Gentlemen, I have come here to be heard, not to be looked at."
