One of the most barbarous acts in Mexican history %,

as committed on Tuesday, April 19th, at Limon, Avhere a passenger train to Mexico City was stopped by bandits. The large military escort in charge of the train was practically exterminated, and the bandits then proceeded to massacre the passengers. Very few cAltped, and some of those wounded were burned to death when the bandits set fire to the train. The immediate result of this atrocity was that the Govern- ment deported to the United States the majority of the Mexican bishops. Reports had reached the capital that among the bandits were several priests, and the Church was therefore accused of having instigated the affair. It is easier to believe that the Government, in their long-standing campaign against the Church, have chosen to make use of a plausible pretext for very dramatic Propaganda. On the other hand, some of the persecuted priests have undoubtedly become revolutionaries, and may associate with bandits. President Calles has appointed a Financial Dictator over the Mexican Treasury.
