NONE SO FAST AS STROKE

[To the Editor of THE SPECTATOR.] Snt,—Can anyone tell me where to find the celebrated descrip- tion by Ouida of an Oxford rowing crew : " All rowed fast, but none so fast as stroke " ? Can it be that this mot, on which several generations have been brought up, is an apocryphal Ouidaism ? I should not like to think this.—Yours, &c.,

ROSE MAC.AULAY.
