Poineare, who argued that M. Herriot had made no use of the various openings which the Conference gave him for extracting concessions. M. Herriot had little difficulty in defending himself. The contrast between these two protagonists was really remarkable—M. Poincare, inflexible and frigidly precise, regarding the whole matter almost inhumanly as a piece of arithmetic, and M. Herriot; with tolerance and expansiveness, urging_ the essential importance of an Allied understanding on moral and psychological grounds if general peace was to be made even a probability. The Government- received a very handsome majority.
