Sir: Mr W. Atton's oblique criticism •of Sir Denis Brogan (Letters, 23 August) strikes me as odd. The juxtaposition of that well-known Scotch canker (of English insertion?) of Forth Road Bridge tolls with the world-shattering news of the impending demise of the Argylls argues an insular sense of proportion.

The whole truth of the dastardly plot regard- ing Dalyell and Lieutenant-Colonel Mitchell is missed :(by Brogan as well, i might add). Mad Mitch is obviously Ben Ritchie-Hooke in dis- guise (the Argylls—Mitchforce perhaps?), Dalyell a- reincarnated Box-Bender, Mr Harold Wilson an appropriate nom de guerre for Mr Brown (father of Miss Brown, friend of Miss Mouse). But where oh where is Agatha Run- cible? What are sa5 doing? Agreeing with Oscar Wilde that nature imitates art?
