British industry

Sir: British industry is constantly bemoaning the fact that its order books are always shrinking and citing this as justification for closures and lay-offs.

If my experience of the past few weeks is anything to go by I really am not surprised.

After writing to British companies for information on their products and stating clearly the exact information I require, I get back letters giving only the barest details. I don't know if this is a ploy to increase a particular person's postbag and thus give the impression of unundation of work.

What I can say is that it is irritating and time-wasting to have to write a second letter to gain information requested in the first. This generally leads to the order going to overseas firms, e.g. Japan or the US, who deal promptly and completely with customers.
