The project to celebrate the Millenary of the City of

Oxford in the coming year can be amply justified on historic grounds. For though the existence of pre-academic Oxford can be traced back to a much earlier date, it was in 912 that it was first mentioned as a place of importance in an authentic renord. In view of the old antagonism between town and gown, it is pleasant to note that the proposal to celebrate the Millenary and to take part in the celebration now comes from the members of the University.
