of this book the reader will have hopes that the mantle of Mr. Richard Bagot has descended on the author. Unfortunately, the garment proves to be a world too wide, and after a promising beginning the story becomes so improbable that it is difficult to take much interest in it. It is strange that anyone who writes with such an apparent knowledge of the Roman Catholic world should think it possible that a Cardinal of the Roman Church could masquerade as a layman in London and subsequently be recalled to Rome.
