THE FOUNDATIONS OF AMERICAN NATIONALITY.

This first volume of " A Short History of the American People " is by the Professor of History at the University of Illinois, and brings the history of the Republic down to 1789. The concluding volume, The Development of American Nationality, is being written by Carl Russell Fish, the Professor of American History at the University of Wisconsin, and brings the record from 1783 down to the present day. The aim of this history is to supply the general reader and begin- ning students with a short but comprehensive survey which shall make use of the copious and significant material which modern research has amassed since Bancroft's History of the United States was finished forty years ago. Professor Greene has done his share admirably. He has set out his sound and liberal views in a most pleasant manner, and has appended useful bibliographies to each chapter.
