From Island to Empire. By John S. C. Bridge. With

an Introduction by Admiral Sir Cyprian Bridge, G.C.B. (Chatto and Windus. 8s.)—This little book gives us a rapid survey "of the expansion of England by force of arms." With the notable exceptions of Australia and New Zealand, the history of the growth of the Empire is closely linked with that of our great soldiers and sailors, Mr. Bridge begins with the Elizabethan seamen and ends with Lord Roberts. The writer's style is clear and readable, and the historical table and the numerous maps are useful for reference.
