President Garfield has had, a serious relapse, which rendered an

operation necessary to remove the splinters of bone from the wound, and to open the gathering which they had caused. The operation was conducted without chloroform, only ether spray being used to diminish the pain, and was perfectly successful. Since then the President's progress has been satisfactory, and the last accounts are exceedingly favourable. The President has evidently an iron constitution, and may yet completely recover, where nine healthy men in ten would have succumbed. But as the medical journals warn us, with the bullet still in the wound, gatherings, and the fever and weakness they cause, may at any time return.
