CAMPBELL'S " HOHENLINDEN "

Sta,—In his article on Thomas Campbell in your issue of June 56th Mr. S. K. Ratcliffe says: " All anthologists have recognised the unique- ness of Holtenlinden. They have not minded the visual rhyme in its final word." Everyone feels the jar when the last syllable of the final word (sepulchre) is not in consonance with those of the last words in the other stanzas (rapidly, scenery, chivalry, &c.). One must suppose that in Campbell's time the word was pronounced as though written sepulchry.—
