When allowance is made for the present difficult conditions in Eastern banking, the annual report of the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China is a satisfactory one, the profits amounting to £627,000 as compared with £724,000 in the year previous. Indications of less active trade are present in the smaller total of the note circulation, and the balance sheet shows that fewer bills were held. Ordinary advances, however, increased although there was a small decline in the total of deposits, the reduction being chiefly in current and
