Social security

Sir: Your readers will be relieved to learn from Mr Mandelson that he had no hand in the rescinding of Paul Routledge's appoint- ment as political editor of the Express, or in putting Tony Bevins in his place (Letters, 23 May). However, they may be sorry that the Minister without Portfolio did not clear up the matter of his presence in the Express building on Thursday, 7 May when be attended a meeting with Lord Hollick, the newspaper's chief executive, and Rosie Boycott, its editor. No doubt it was merely a social call during which useful ideas about the Dome were exchanged. But it cannot be denied that, although government ministers sometimes attend lunch at newspaper premises, it is rather unusual for them to turn up there for meetings.
