Replying on behalf of the Government, Herr von Bethmann- Hollweg,

the new Imperial Secretary of the Interior, laid stress on the influence exerted by international factors in determining the prica of corn. Although the increased prosperity of industry had reacted to the detriment of agriculture by reducing the supply of labour, he refused to regard the situation as serious, or to accede to the suggestion that the Government should modify its economic policy. Prices would not permanently remain at their present high level, but even a temporary suspension of the Corn-duties was out of the question. The debate should prove instructive reading to those who maintain that Germany is the El Dorado of the working classes.
