DIPLOMATIC ERRORS

SIR,—For all I know, M. Olivier Wormser, who is indeed 'one of the chief representatives in Brussels of Gaullist diplomacy,' may very well have been violently opposed to the European Defence Com- munity. But that would surely be the only thing he had in common with M. Andre Wurmscr, one of the best-known French Communist journal- ists, who writes every day in L'Hurnanite a col- umn which has become proverbial by its violence and vulgarity. Someone must have been pulling the leg of your distinguished correspondent, Mr. Anthony Hartley ('A Democratic Europe,' Novem- ber 16). But if such good journalists make such hilarious errors in such a serious weekly, I shudder when I think of the misconceptions about British diplomats into which the Parisian press may have led its helpless readers.
