Juliette's Weekly Frolic

My much-heralded National Hunt campaign got off to a promising, if unprofitable, start with Into View's hard-fought Newbury victory over Spanish Steps. A stride-for-stride duel up the straight after 2i miles of obstacles on their seasonal debuts, paid tribute to the soundness of NH form. With the popularity scales now weighing heavily in "chasing's favour, the Flat fires a valiant parting shot with Haydock's weekend sprints. The lesser of these, Friday's Claude Harrison Memorial Trophy, has attracted no fewer than thirty four-day acceptors and I hope Spanish Princess who sensibly prefers her chance with 8st 31b in this handicap to the full stone more she is set in the lucrative weight-for-age Vernon's Cup the following day, will provide a happy solution. A surprise winner of the William Hill Silver Vase, she was beaten less than two lengths by potential champion Green God at Goodwood in July. The latter will probably be favourite for Saturday's generous prize, but the opposition is formidable. Sweet Revenge beat Swing Easy a length in France recently and the latter was half that distance behind Green God in the 'Nunthorpe ' before their placings were reversed. However, Stewards' Cup winner Apollo Nine finished 2i lengths in front of sweet Revenge at Ascot last month and if the Flat formbook is to redeem itself at this eleventh hour, he should win now. Assets: £12.54. Outlay: £5 to win Apollo Nine.
