Nuclear family

David Bonser says BNFL is committed to respect and responsibility

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is key to many industries, but for the nuclear industry it is imperative. The future of the nuclear industry is determined by political decisions, which in turn are influenced by public opinion.

In 2003, BNFI, released its first CSR report. Our key audience was our employees. BNEL, employs 23,000 people in 16 countries around the world, and without their understanding and support we would not be able to continue to earn the trust of our stakeholders.

We have a commitment to demonstrate that we arc an economically viable, environmentally responsible and socially beneficial company. But this is only the start of the journey. We have, for a number of years, produced annual Environment, Health and Safety reports, but now, for the first time, we have tried to look at the total impact of our business.

Living our values The right attitudes, behaviours and relationships with stakeholders arc fundamental to good business. The challenge is to 'live' these values during a time of significant change for INK,.

Deliver value and profit As BNFL begins to transform itself from a business that has always owned and operated its own facilities to one that has few assets other than its people, and succeeds by selling its skills and meeting its contractual obligations, our challenge is to match these credentials with a sharper competitive edge in the future.

Commit to success for our customers Efforts to strengthen customer relationships helped in deliver strong results for Westinghouse. Among the highlights, the business completed its second repair and maintenance project at the Qinshan site in China and made its first delivery of fuel to Electricite de France (EDF). In the service sector, EDF named Westinghouse as the leading supplier of steam generator services for the second year running.

At Magnox, we exceeded our electricity generation target by 5 per cent. Oldbury power station had its best output ever, and Sizewell A passed a milestone by generatingits one hundred billionth kilowatt hour of electricity. The amount of Magnox spent fuel sent to Sellafield exceeded target by more than 13 per cent.

Be safe and environmentally responsible In 2004 we continued to improve against all our environmental and safety indicators and exceeded many of our key targets. Our nuclear safety record was the best ever, and we improved our conventional safety record with lower scores for all our accident frequency rates. As well as raising our own standards, we are also working with all our regulators to make sure that safety and sound practice are embedded in the ND,Vs system of incentives and penalties for all its contractors.

Act with integrity and respect for others Integrity and respect are important internally and externally. In March 2004, we were pleased to be ranked 43rd in die Business in the Community Top 100 Corporate Responsibility Index, and in the Top Ten 'Best at Managing Environmental Issues' in the same index. The fact that public trust in BNFI„ as measured by MORI, has now returned to pre-1999 levels is an indication of how far we have come in communicating openly and honestly with our stakeholders.
