NATIONALISM

[To the Editor of THE SPECTATOR] Sta,—In its leading article of September 22nd The Times declares : " In the age of Nationalism the only strategic frontier worth its name is a frontier of race or language."

Surely this is an extremely dangerous theory to hold within the British Empire, which is and must remain based on the co-operation of different nationalities within the Empire. Also, what of Switzerland, with three races and three languages ? Has Switzerland no strategic frontier worth a name ?

The Pope assures us that an exaggerated Nationalism can only lead to war. I am not a Catholic, but I admire the Pope for his undaunted opposition to the ideas of the Dictators in their Nationalist crusades. No one can call him " Red,"
