GENERAL CHEERFULNESS.

THROUGHOUT the week markets have displayed indifference alike to the reported deadlock at The Hague and the serious news from Palestine. Moreover, the cheerfulness of markets is the more noteworthy having regard to the fact that- the monetary outlook is still obscure. Gold exports have been less active, however, while some fairly large amounts in sovereigns are on the way from the Cape and Australia, and, most markets being in thoroughly optimistic mood, the tendency has been to emphasize the favourable points and to disregard the uncertainties arising out of the Hague Conference.
