Market matters

Sir: As one who actively opposed Britain's entry into the EEC, I agree with much in Sir Christopher Masterman's excellent letter of August 10, Like Sir Christopher, I, too, am alarmed at the massive dose of socialism we may surely expect if Labour wins the next election.

However, much as I dislike socialism, I would prefer to live under a socialist party which takes us out of the EEC rather than a lukewarm one masquerading as Conservative (for isn't that what Mr Heath's Party really is?) which is intent on keeping us in. But I am afraid that a Labour government will 're-negotiate' a formula for keeping us in which will be acceptable to its paymasters — the trade unions — thus giving it an excuse for reneging on any vote-catching pledges made in its manifesto.

The Conservatives have already shown that they are not to be trusted where the EEC is concerned — "Our sole commitment is to negotiate; no more, no less." So how does one vote when the next election comes?

Earlier this year I left the RAF after spending twenty-two years in the ranks. When I look back on the world-wide

British policy of scuttle and surrender; when I contemplate the present state of our country, fettered as it is to the Continental imbroglio; when 1 witness the envy and hatred preached by the trade union militants; and when I see the calibre of our so-called leaders, I begin to wonder whether I spent those years in vain — would I not have been more usefully, employed selling ice cream off Brighton Pier?
