NEWS OF THE WEEK.

THE new work at Mont Avron was bombarded by the Germans all Tuesday and Wednesday (27th and 28th December) ; on the 28th the batteries of the place were apparently silenced, and on the 29th the place was occupied by the 12th Army Corps. Mili- tary authorities do not seem to think that the position, which is within the range of the fire of the forts of Rosny and, we imagine, aslogent, can be held without entrenchments, which in this severe frost it would be impossible to make. But this speedy success for the German batteries, which were, no doubt, tried experimentally on Mont Avron, will rather encourage the besiegers to try their lands on one of the regular forts. Indeed, the French say that on the 28th a furious attack was made on Nogent and Rosny, which failed.
