kept a united front in face of the defeat in

the House of Commons. After a discussion at Lambeth lasting two days a very wise and temperate statement was issued. The substance of it was that no just measure of the sig- nificance of the defeat could be taken in haste, and that the Bishops had therefore adjourned till January 11th. It is suggested that a policy in regard to the Prayer Book Measure should then be framed and that it should be submitted to the Church Assembly and to the Convoca- tions in February. The statement, however, contained a great deal that was much more helpful than a mere notice of postponement. It was really a message of counsel and encouragement to the Church.
