Bitter Sweet

SIR,—In your issue dated December 10, 1965, Leslie Adrian in his article headed 'Bitter Sweet' referred to the Wisconsin tests in which rats were fed on calcium cyclamate. This was outdated information

and obviously he was not in possession of the latest reports on the subject. What he failed to mention was that since the results of • the Wisconsin tests were made known, the responsible American authority—the Food and Drug Administration of the US Department of Health, Education and Welfare in Washington—issued on May 20, 1965, the follow- ing statement: Within the past year, FDA has received new

experimental data on the safety of cyclamates, including animal studies, tests involving ingestion by children and other data. FDA's Bureau of Medicine and Division of Toxicological Evalua- tion have reviewed these studies 'and concluded that there is no evidence that cyclamates at present use levels are a hazard to health.
