The most interesting point in the continued debate on Wednesday

was the quite unexpected statement of the Solicitor-General, Sir Stafford Cripps, that under the Bill the strike of 1926 would have been illegal. The Labour Members were stunned for a moment by this answer to the question which the Attorney-General had evaded. But the Solicitor-General was quite clear about it. The High Court, in his opinion, would have said that the " primary object was not industrial." The Government's majority in the division was larger than had been expected. This was not an occasion on which speeches influenced votes.
