WESTMORELAND AND HOME-RULE.

[TO TUE EDITOR OF THE "SPECTATOR."]

SIR,—It is just possible that a misleading impression may be conveyed by a statement in your issue of July 2ith, with regard to the Northern Counties and Home-rule. You remark that "in Northumberland, Cumberland, Westmoreland, Durham, and Yorkshire, there is a large majority of representatives favourable to Home-rule." That is quite true ; but I should like to point out that of the Northern Counties, Westmoreland alone is represented in each of its divisions by a Member pledged to the maintenance of the legislative integrity of the United Kingdom. In the Southern Division, the seat of the Earl of Bective was not challenged ; and in the Northern Division, the majority of the Hon. W. Lowther was increased nearly twenty- fold.—I am, Sir, &c., Kendal, July 27th. EDGAR S. LEWIS. We included Westmoreland, though we were aware that it diminished the Home-rule vote, only for the sake of geographical continuity.—ED. Spectator.]
