The Cliveden Set

I greatly enjoyed seeing the daddy of the marketeers, Sir Oswald Mosley, arguing the European case on television. Mosely is a formidable fellow, disarming, intelligent, and for a ranter extraordinarly nice to meet. He has been ranting the European case since the early thirties. Once lately, racking my brains for the most intellectually consistent advocate to argue the European case • from the basic political point of view and not from the whinging economic one, I thought to invite Sir Oswald to contribute. ATV and BBC 2 have both anticipated me; but I still am attracted to any article called "Why I say we must join Europe — by Sir Oswald Mosley," and I wonder why such an article has not commended itself already to fellow Marketeers like Cudlipp or Rees-Mogg. It is often pointed out that the anti-marketeers are an oddly assorted lot; but there are ever. more peculiar bed-fellows in the market camp.
