Further to the bulger Sir: With reference to Celia Haddon's

letter in your issue of 26 June, a bulger, according to Chambers's Twentieth Century Dictionary, the Concise Oxford Dictionary, Webster's Collegiate Dictionary and the Encyclopaedia Britannica, is a wooden golf-club (driver or brassy) with a convex face. What connection this could have with hockey I cannot imagine, but perhaps the writer of the song was not a sports-person.
