Over-many

Sir : Poor mixed-up John Grigg (17 July). And such a pity he is tarred with the same brush as those he has invented for his criticism. How little national and cultural self-confidence he has! There is but one serious problem with the coloured (or noncoloured) immigrant population. There are too many. God knows Britain is a mixture of races. The people of this country are very tolerant, and they probably possess other nationally distinctive qualities of charity.

When the government rescues people from oppression, as with Jews from Hitler's Germany or Asians from the evil part of African nationalism, the people of this country would generally endorse their action. Help and protection is well given. When the government suggests that hundreds of thousands of people who were given British passports as earnest of our protection (which we could once offer them as Commonwealth citizens) should now have a right to come and stay in Britain, then the people of this country know that their government has lost all sense of Christian charity and duty.
