Euro on the menu

EAT up your nice euros, says the Depart- ment of Trade and Industry. We know they taste disgusting, but they're good for you. By way of forcing them down, the DTI can- teen has gone on message, and now offers what it calls 'Euromenus — affecting UK businesses, affecting DTI policies'. Thus, if it's Tuesday, it must be 'Belgium — mussels in a tomato and garlic broth'. Later in the week, the Netherlands stands for fried her- rings in a red onion jus, Portugal for sar- dines, and Ireland, oddly enough, for bat- tered cod. Germany offers cabbage leaves stuffed with Black Forest risotto — hang on? I had hoped to see France's name linked with a well-balanced 1990 claret and was vexed to be put off with a Brie and but- ternut squash torte, surely unknown to Escoffier — but it turns out that the DTI is teetotal. At the foot of the menu I find what must be the Treasury's contribution: mandarin sponge. No, thanks, I couldn't eat the last one.
