The Eights of England in the South African War. By

E. Petavel, D.D. Translated by the Rev. Canon St. John. (Black- wood and Sons. Gd.)—Dr. Petavers pamphlet is a welcome proof that there are reasonable and honest people who will stand up for England even where popular feeling runs highest against us. The Swiss are misled by a highly plausible error, the idea that the South African Republics, really governed by slave-holding oligarchies, and now contending against Great Britain, resemble the Swiss Cantons fighting for freedom against neighbouring Empires.
