THE CHURCHWARDEN DETHRONED.

[To the Editor of the SPECTATOR.] SIR,—Under the new Act the ancient and honourable office of churchwarden ceases to have any power or responsibility, financial or otherwise,. It has become a merely nominal post. What, therefore, is the point of continuing to induct churchwardens ? Obviously this is farcical. Again, and more especially in these days when the cutting down of every need- less expense is all the cry, what is the sense of and justification in demanding a fee for a functionless office ?—I am, Sir, &c., CIIURCIIWARDEN.
