Lithuanian independence

Sir: The policy of the United States to- wards the Republic of Lithuania suggests inconsistency in US foreign policy. The State Department may be correct in claim- ing that the government of Professor Landsbergis is not in 'effective control of its territory', yet this excuse for non- recognition is discredited by precedent. Through to 1974 America recognised the `One day, son, all this will be your mother's.' government of Taiwan as the legitimate authority throughout China even though that government clearly does not control the territory of all China, and certainly could not enter into agreements on behalf of the mainland.

Is the West really serving the interest of East European freedom by supporting President Gorbachev when he acts as a tyrant?
