Children first

From Mary Marsh Sir: Your leading article (17 May) asks why the principle of respect for the rights of the child — 'whatever they may be' — should be enshrined in the European Union's constitutional treaty. The answer is simple. Those who harm children are no respecters of borders. The European Union is already an essential part of the fight against the trafficking of children, child pornography and Internet crime. But it could do more. Making respect for the rights of the child a fundamental objective of the EU is not only a worthy declaration, but also will mean that the EU must consider the best interests of children in all legislation and policies in future. We should all welcome that.
