Whiter weddings in black Africa

Sir: In her interesting article on Botswana (10 October) Miss Mortimer called Sir Seretse Khama 'the first African leader to marry

a white woman . . which is in- accurate. Sir Milton Margai who led Sierra Leone to independence in 1961 and was its first indepen- dent Prime Minister was married to a white woman. He was more- over a statesman of considerable ability and a peer, at least, of Sir Seretse.

Mike Henry Abbey Cottage, Ampleforth Col- lege, York Sir: The mover of the resolution on Rhodesian sanctions at the Conservative Conference reiterated two statements which never seem to be refuted.

Firstly: that Rhodesians are our kith and kin; Secondly: that they flocked to arms in support of the United Kingdom in two wars.

In the first place, according to the 1961 census, 58,000 of the whites in Rhodesia were born in South Africa. We are not told how many of these are Dutchmen; or how many of the remaining 163,500 are of the same stock.

In the second place, we are not told how many of the eligible white Rhodesians served in the First and Second Wars, and of these what proportion were of British extract.
