An ally for Enoch

To those in business to whom the appalling problems of the economy and roaring in- flation seem paramount, Enoch Powell's skilful piece in last week's SPECFATOR attack- ing the Prime Minister's promotion of Mr John Davies appears to put forward the arguments of the medieval Guilds, the Trade Union Carthorse, the Suez canal pilots and more recently, the National Union of Journalists. it is the language of those who have served long ill-paid apprenticeships, it is the language of the envy of the few whose path in whatsoever sphere seems effortless. It is the language of 'first in—last out'.

Not unexpectedly Mr Powell has a ready ally in Mr Nicholas Ridley, Mr John Davies's Under-secretary for Industry, who vehe- mently used the same arguments in private conversation before the Election. The Prime Minister will have few allies on this issue among those others who need and live by politics in his own party.
