Beastly trade

Sir: During the recent financial 'crisis' a participant in the New York Stock Ex- change said, 'This place is motivated by two things, fear and greed.' This is self-evident in looking at the faces on television of some of the people who work on the Stock Exchange as they hold a phone in each hand, roaring down one and listening to the other one, or bawling and jostling with staring eyes as they wave pieces of paper in the air. What a degrading way to earn a living!

As Gay wrote 'We wholly overlook the essential fact that the achievements which society rewards are won at the dimunition of personality.'

The Stock Exchange does well to use such terms as bear and bull to describe its activities. Surely there must be a better way for them to order their affairs than the economic Darwinism that is such an embarrassment to watch as it is enacted before our eyes.
