Sir: How heartening it is to see Charles Clover coming

out against the Govern- ment's woeful environment record.

In Oxford we have just been informed of the Department of Transport's plans to build a bypass through the green belt to the north of the A40, and a glossy brochure misleads us into thinking that there will be a reduction in production.

In fact, the bypass is six lanes for much of its length, and it is almost certainly being planned as part of an east-west trunk road, a `motorway by stealth'. The peaceful coun- tryside on our doorsteps is to be torn apart and we will have much more pollution, not less, since the Government is clearly plan- ning for a huge traffic increase.

Many of your readers will have happy associations with Oxford and will value the area around this fine city. May I urge them to do all they can to put an end to the Gov- ernment's folly?
