Morning Off

Celebrating August Bank Holiday in ad- vance, I renewed my acquaintance with Southend-on-Sea. This was chiefly because in a conversation with a number of professional ex- perts in the pleasures of the flesh (writers, I mean, on food, drink, holidays and general fashionable fun) I was saddened to learn that none of them had even set foot in Southend. Also, they were all surprised that anyone of any pretensions to taste whatsoever should dream of doing such a thing. Pitiable creatures: how much they have missed never to have supped from the same cup as Princess Charlotte, or her mother, poor Caroline, or Nelson's Lady Hamil- ton, or Jane Austen's Knightleys, or James Agate, or several scores of millions of East Enders, not to mention Starbuck.
