6s.) The Shelter Book. An Entertainment devised by Clemente Dane (Longman's. 6s.) THIS is an anthology of stories, poems, quotations, games, all mixed up with pieces of advice from the compiler, designed to keep everybody amused in the shelter, but not so quiet (there is a list of records-including such pieces as " Loch Lomond " and a Gondoliers selection by a military band-which will add to the terrors of shelter-life). It is difficult to understand why shelterers should be regarded as imbeciles and be expected to need (like book club members) their reading chosen for them (there are lists of detective stories, thrillers, children's books), and one can't quite picture the shelter where Miss Dane's little educative round games are likely to be welcome. This is a war, and a serious war, and those in the front line really need a tot of rum more than a whimsical album.
