Towards a Bigamy Bill?

Sir: Are you not adopting not a Christian but a sectarian view of divorce in your leading article 'Towards a Bigamy Bill?' (20 December). Only a Roman Catholic could describe a Divorce Reform Bill-in such terms, and this is indeed the line of objection adopted by Roman Catholic objectors to the divorce reforms at present being discussed in this country of Canada.

You say that `to the Christian concept of marriage there is little fundamental difference between bigamy accompanied by a secular legal formula known as "divorce" and bigamy tout court.'

Instead of Christian you should write Roman Catholic Christian, for no other Church regards marriages contracted between legally divorced people as bigamous, nor indeed puts divorce in inverted commas.

I often think that articles, lectures, etc, on matters concerning sex, marriage, education and family life should be accompanied by in- formation as to the sectarian bias of the authors. Otherwise there is a conflict of interest hidden from the readers.
