Merge them

Sir: My personal view is that some form of intervention by the British Government is necessarY to prevent the American-owned Chrysler car corporation from completely liquidating their manufacturing operations in the United Kingdom

What I dislike is the actual mode of rescue proposed by this present Government. We have, for instance, been told by Mr Varley, who succeeded Mr Benn as Secretary for Industry, that Chrysler USA even offered to pay us no less than 630 million to take their loss-making British subsidiary off their hands! In my opinion, the Government should have accepted this bargain, because the merits of the Hillman Imp as an ideal vehicle for these times of dear petrol have not been stressed with much force by Chrysler and so there is great potential here for improvement. It seems silly, on the contrary, to waste up to 6162 million of our money to subsidise a competitor of British Leyland. I I had my way, Chrysler UK would be taken over and merged with British Leyland to form one mammoth, British-owned vehicle maker. The former Rootes Group would thus return to British control. P.
